Treasure Chest, The Incredible Dog - Movie & Training

The loving dogs who entertained so many of us, brought joy to so many others, and raised incredible amounts of money to help cancer research, died in the summer of 2004.  Treasure One was ten – and Treasure Two was only six.  Pam Dickson can barely speak their names without bursting into tears…..and yet…..she ambles across the green parkland of Fursman Kennels where another dear little German Shepherd jumps up for joy and licks her hand as he cavorts around in the summer sun.

Is he the next “Treasure”?  In spirit, YES! But this one year old Sheperd's name is Treasure III and Pam will be training him in the fall of 2007. Will he too raise thousands of dollars to save lives?  Will he star in "Treasure Chest, The Incredible Dog"? We’ll have to wait and see.

I feel so fortunate to have found another such incredible, beautiful and loving dog, with just the right temperament to work and perform around children and older people.

At this point in Treasure’s life, I really believe he will be capable of starring in the future feature film “Treasure Chest, The Incredible Dog”. Linked below is information on the background and training issues of German Shepherds with specifics on how "Treasure Chest" is advancing.

German Shepherds, A Short History

The German Shepherd breed is a pure and ancient one.  They are descended from the sheep dogs of Germany and have remained a pure type, possessing natural beauty.  The breed might never have been known in England if it had not been for World War I.  The Germans had used the breed for sheep dogs, but when the war broke out, they trained them as messengers and carriers of Red Cross supplies for the injured soldiers.   Some of the dogs strayed and were found by the British soldiers, who brought them back home after the war.   These dogs were the original founders in England of this breed.

In choosing a puppy, a safe guide is to inspect the parents to see if they are sound and healthy.  A soft brown eye always gives a kinder and more pleasing expression.

At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, there was an appeal for trained dogs and experienced trainers.  They were needed to work with the Air Force and Army.  A number of German Shepherds and trainers were enlisted.   These early recruits were soon able to pass on their knowledge to others in the forces.  They performed an incredible service for the country and saved a great number of lives when working with rescue parties, doing mine detection, and guarding aerodromes.

German Shepherds are international.  They are seen all over the world and top all other breeds with their exceptional protection and the companionship they give.  No other breed possesses a keener sense of hearing or the uncanny sixth sense of knowing when danger is near.  They are always on the alert and ready to give the alarm.  Their protective instincts make them ideal as guard dogs and companions for children.

Although they are large, German Shepherds are seldom clumsy.  They are never as happy as when carrying out their master’s commands.  They thrive on working and are very unhappy if they are kept in a kennel.  The German Shepherd is basically a working dog, capable of great endurance and adaptable to any climate.  Their beauty, intelligence, and aptitude for being trained have placed them among the more popular breeds. Displayed below are just a few photographs taken at Fursman Kennels where Treasure (Rocky) is being trained. You can see that Treasure isn't the only fun-loving creature roaming these fields.

"Steer", a six year old Red Angus, is my pride and joy, resting with his very close friend Just William, a pie-bald three year old, 32 inch high miniature horse. Their paddock runs along the driveway leading up to the kennels. My clients and friends have great pleasure in watching them play with each other. Steer weighs 2000 pounds and William weighs just 100 pounds so you can just imagine the excitement when people see them frolicking.
Rosy and her son, Teddy, were slated for the glue factory when I bought them
at an auction. I took the emaciated donkeys to my animal sanctuary in Virginia, fed them, bathed them, and fixed them a warm place to sleep. Here they are seen enjoying some new leaves on a Maple tree.
Rosy and Charlie, my five year old nephew visiting from England, having fun. The stubborn donkey never did move any one of her four feet.
Samantha a Jack Russell
one of my many boarders here at Fursman Kennels.
Treasure Junior
who has grown into one magnificent German Shepherd. Not only is he handsome, but is genuinely kind and loving - a must for the kind of work in which he will be engaged.
