++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Pamela M. Dickson, President November 29, 2001 The Treasure Chest Cancer Benefit was held at Fursman Kennels, Middleburg on September 16, 2001, with the proceeds towards the purchase of a SenographeŽ 2000D Full-Field Digital Mammography system - a new computerized mammogram service. This equipment will be for use at the Winchester Hospital's Breast Cancer Unit and will serve the needs of women throughout fourteen neighboring counties. The tragedy of the horrific events of September 11 overtook this even and only three hundred people were able to attend out of the one thousand guests who originally accepted. Middleburg, too, had its share of tragedies at this time. Two young ladies lost theirs and four people died of cancer. However, everyone at the event put on a brave face. The day dawned with a clear blue sky and with the sunny day and beautiful setting, Treasure Chest lifted the saddened hearts, putting a smile on the faces of the spectators. The event turned out to be a great success with more than $40,000 (and growing) being raised for this worthwhile cause. You may wonder why an animal lover like me is working on a Breast Cancer Fund instead of an animal charity. The reason being I have friends and acquaintances stricken with this disease. I'm sure you also know or have heard of someone who has had breast cancer. This new equipment detects breast cancer much earlier than traditional methods. The Senographe is "more meticulous than a human could possibly be. It examines every pixel of film and never gets tired" according to Dr. Timothy Freer, Director of the Women's Diagnostic and Breast Health Center in Plano, Texas while explaining the equipment's merits on Good Morning America. Treasure, Jr. and Pam Dickson would like to thank everyone who so generously gave to this very worth cause. Our goal is $500,000. Several organizations are planning special Treasure Chest exhibitions as well as special functions at Fursman Kennels. As you turn into my entrance, you can see the soft, rolling countryside and in the distance the Bull Run Mountains of Fauquier County. Just over my fence line to the right is Hickory Tree Farm, the home of beautiful Thoroughbred mares and foals. Driving down my lane gives you a look of true, natural beauty. Century-old oak and maple trees stand on either side, and a winding creed trickles under a narrow wooden bridge. Daffodils and daylillies flutter in the breeze in their own season, and beyond them is a covert for wild flowers and animals. Frequently, foxes and deer can be seen crossing the drive, and rabbits and chipmunks show little fear of cars passing by. Continuing down the lane you will be amazed to see a two-thousand pound Red Angus whose name is Steer, and not too far away will be William, a 32-inch skewbald pony. It is a sight to behold, to watch them either playing or just lying snuggled closely. In the same paddock is Rosy, a gray donkey and her son, Teddy. A little distance away from this quiet, unhurried haven is a stone entrance where, in the spring, I plant the varied colors of impatiens. On the opposite side, water lilies bloom in a small goldfish pond. Frogs too, enjoy this sanctuary. Finally, arriving at the kennels, Treasure's many other furry and feathered friends are not forgotten. A white dwarf rabbit named Bunny spends his days watching the comings and goings of many dogs who come to stay. Near the charming old barn, several Rhode Island Red hens chatter about with each passing morning. A constant enjoyment are the many pet birds, which include pigeons, doves, love birds and a cockateel... all of which call Fursman Kennels home. Also, at the Treasure Chest Cancer Fund Benefit... autographed "Treasure Chest The Incredible Dog" future movie posters and Noble Friends books, Easy Dog Training videos, Treasure Chest T-shirts, hayrides, raffles and various other fabulous attractions. I do hope you will be able to attend. | |||||||||
